The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Intern will provide care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit under the direct proctoring and supervision of an attending Neonatogist or Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. The NNP Intern will perform all clinical functions of the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, while becoming familiar with the role of the NNP in the Nemours Children’s Hospital setting.
These responsibilities are of utmost importance and the department cannot function without them (limit 8-10)
Patient Care Management Provides care for the patient requiring neonatal intensive care utilizing collaborative consultation with team members, under the direct supervision of the neonatal nurse practitioner preceptor and/or the attending neonatologist. Performs a complete newborn physical examination and assessment of gestational age, discriminating between normal and abnormal findings.
c. Conducts parent interviews and takes family history.
Collaborates with neonatologists concerning pertinent historical events, physical findings, diagnostic and therapeutic measures initiated on all admissions. Orders appropriate laboratory tests and procedures. Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures necessary and appropriate for the care of the patient. Procedures carried out under the direct supervision of the NNP preceptor and/or supervising physician to include: Insertion of intravenous catheters Insertion of umbilical artery and vein catheters Insertion of percutaneous arterial lines Insertion of PICC lines Artery puncture Lumbar puncture Venipuncture Ordering daily fluids and medications Suprapubic bladder tap/bladder catheterization Laryngoscopy and tracheal suctioning Interpretation of routine lab studies Interpretation of neonatal radiographs Abdominal paracentesis (with physician assistance) Remove sutures, arterial catheters, central catheters, and chest tubes Pass nasojejunal tube (with radiology assistance) Nasotracheal intubation Endotracheal intubation Ventilator management Thoracentesis (needle decompression of pneumothorax) Chest Tube Placement (with physician assistance) Pericardiocentesis Exchange transfusion Order vasoactive drug(s) infusion(s) Advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation of neonates, including drug therapy. Reviews and provides general care items involved in neonatal care, such as temperature stabilization, hyperalimentation therapy, feeding management, and phototherapy. Participates in daily rounds in NICU Intervenes appropriately to assist in meeting the emotional needs of the families Collaborates with attending physician, social worker, nursing staff, and other health care members in planning follow-up care Actively participates in counseling and educating parents and family members Facilitates the transfer of patients to/from other hospitals Fosters a spirit of inquiry, identifies nursing problems, and participates in research endeavors. Disseminates nursing research findings and incorporates these findings into nursing practices for patient care within the specialty area.
Verifies that the quality of care is documented in the medical records Elicits, records and interprets the past medical, psychosocial and obstetrical history of the neonate’s family. Documents total plan for delivery of care, writes orders for accomplishing that plan and implements the plan personally or through collaboration with medical and nursing staff. Orders will be co-signed by an attending neonatologist according to facility medical staff bylaws and regulations. Evaluates and revises plan of care on an ongoing basis and reviews revisions with NNP preceptor and attending Neonatologist. Assists with discharge planning/teaching. Assists with completion of discharge summary. Participates in quality assurance and improvement programs and works with department management to improve the services provided.
