Stabilizes the neonate prior to and during air and ground transports as a recognized job priority, as well as stabilize newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and in the delivery room utilizing protocols and guidelines as outlined in the Neonatal Stabilization Educational Program under the supervision of the attending neonatologist. Meets qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range on their assigned nursing unit. Responsible for ensuring the very best patient andfamily experience by optimizing all customer interaction.
Job Duties
  • Coordinates Team Activities including assessment, stabilization, management, and monitoring during transport.
  • Gathers history, laboratory data, radiographic studies and any information pertinent to the safe and effective care and management of the neonate and coordinates the processing of this information with the attending neonatologist in order to develop a collaborative and safe management strategy for the benefit of the infant.
  • Manages specific disease processes during transport including fluids, medication, and therapies as per protocol and under the guidance of the attending neonatologist.
  • Works collaboratively with the Outreach Coordinator to provide outreach education to referring hospitals, internal staff, and the community on assessment and stabilization of newborns prior to transport.
  • Communicates effectively with referring center personnel, parents, team members, communication center, and receiving hospital personnel in a non-judgmental and efficient manner and provides all designated documentation of transport events in a timely manner.
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities of the neonatal registered nurse when not performing stabilization and transport of neonates.
  • Must be prepared to leave the unit within ten minutes, including reporting off patient assignment to unit nursing staff, gathering appropriate equipment, and notifying Charge nurse.
  • Participates in performing administrative duties as follows, participates in Neonatal Outreach Education, tracks and maintains transport nurse procedure proficiency and credentialing and coordinates continuing education for RNC maintenance, manages CQI documentation, acts as team liaison to Life Flight crew, acts as team liaison for ambulance services and driver issues, maintains, evaluates and purchases program equipment participates in Pediatric Transport ListServ.
  • Performs intra-facility transport for infants requiring procedural sedation.
  • Maintains Neonatal Critical Care Certification, which requires 45 hours of continuing education every 3 years.
