Works independently and with direction of the Nurse Manager and Nurse Director to assess the units (s) learning needs and participates in the development of unit based education plan that delineates education standards for patients, families, and nursing staff. Demonstrates leadership in the development of education programs and projects for patients, staff, and families. Implements an evaluation plan for unit based education programs. Coodinates and/or conducts both didactic and clinical orientation and continuing education of nursing staff within assigned area (s). Trains, supports, and mentors preceptors to effectively orient new staff members. Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team to meet educational needs of staff in order to promote quality patient outcomes. Presents and/or coodinates unit based in services which follow educational principles and process. Requirements: 

  • 3-5 years experience as a staff RN in the area of Labor and Delivery specialty.

Responsibilities: 

  • Provides theoretical and clinical orientation to nursing staff in the assigned areas (s) of responsibility.
  • Mentors preceptors to achieve this goal. Implements and evaluates a preceptor program in assigned area (s) of responsibility.
  • Collaborates with the Nurse Manager to select and evaluate new preceptors.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to promote quality patient outcomes.
  • Serve as a resource/liaison to other departments outside of nursing and to the community.
  • Develop housewide programs to support education and mentoring of new preceptors.
  • Collaborate to support and assist in the development of the unit based and housewide RN Residency Program.
  • Collaborate and support in the development of support staff training and development programs.
  • Develops a unit based education plan for assigned area (s) of responsibility.
  • Ensure nursing practice is based on evidence of best practice.
  • Ensure best practice information is discussed at multidisciplinary meetings for maximum input and decision making.
  • Supports and embraces the concept of shared governance.
  • Utilizes this approach in daily work routines.
  • Participates in department level and division level performance improvement plans and processes.
  • Works with Nurse Manager and /or Nurse Director to identify and resolve continuity of care issues.
  • Demonstrates a high degree of clinical competence and expertise in assigned areas (s) of responsibility.
  • Provides constructive, sensitive, and timely feedback to others concerning their clinical and administrative performance in verbal and written form.
  • Creates and maintains a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, self, and co-workers.
  • Acts as a role model for others by communicating responsively, respectfully, and assertively with patients, families, and peers as well as other members of the healthcare team.
  • Serves as the Educational Leader for the Women's Health Patient Population.
  • May create, participate, and/or coordinate education across the critical care continuum that would address staff educational needs relating to this patient population.

Credentials - Essential: 

  • RN - Registered Nurse
  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support
  • BABY Certification-15 Hrs Online, 5 Hrs Observation
  • S.T.A.B.L.E. - Post-Resuscitation/pre-transport stabilization
  • NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation Program/ Certificate

Nonessential: 

  • BLS - Basic Life Saving certification

Competencies and Skills - Essential: 

  • Experience In Hospital Or Acute Care Setting
  • Clear Communication Skills Both Written And Verbal
  • Able To Keep Confidential Information Regarding Patients, Team Members
  • Able To Withstand Crisis Situations
  • Has Skills To Provides Customer Service To Patients, Team Members And Visitors
  • Knowledge And Experience With Electronic Health Records
  • Experience With Excel, Power Point, Word, Visio, Etc.

Education - Essential: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (Magnet Recognition)
