JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. to 7:00a.m., as needed

Job Summary:

The CLC or IBCLC Registered Nurse is responsible for the coordination of clinical activities for the breastfeeding mothers and infants and may also function as the couplet nurse or care for newborns who are in transition for the first four hours of life. Activities include, but are not limited to, use of the nursing process in the utilization of skills in organization, planning, implementing, evaluating, and providing care as it relates to the specific needs of the mother/baby dyad. CLC or IBCLC Registered Nurses also supervise the activities of Licensed Practical Nurses, Unit Assistants and Certified Nursing Assistants. As Registered Nurses they work within the framework of the State Nurse Practice Act and follow hospital policies and procedures. As CLCs or IBCLCs they work within the framework of the Scope of Practice for The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners. The CLC or IBCLC Registered Nurse also complies with hospital and nursing standards in the performance of job duties and responsibilities. The IBCLC Registered Nurse will support the goals and objectives of the department and of the hospital.

Minimum Qualifications:

Successfully completed Board Certified Nursing Program and maintains CLC or IBCLC status by renewing every 5 years by CERPS or exam. Minimum of one year of experience as a lactation consultant required. Minimum of one year experience as the nurse transitioning the newborn or as the nurse providing couplet care is required. Current LA RN licensure. BLS required upon hire, and NRP required within 90 days of hire. Certifications may be through any International Liaison Committee on resuscitation (ILCOR) provided courses such as but not limited to: Ochsner Health System, American Heart Association and American Red Cross. The ILCOR course must include a manikin check off.

Physical Demands:
Must possess good physical health. Some requirements include but are not limited to standing, sitting or walking for long periods of time. Lifting at least 50 pounds is required. Must be able to work with a moderate level of noise.
Physical Effort required:

Constant (67%-100%) - seeing
Frequently (34%-66%) - lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, reaching, handling/feeling, talking, hearing
Occasionally (1%-33%) - climbing (stairs, ladders, etc.), stooping, crouching
