Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Registered Nurse Description:
NICU RNs care for premature and critically ill newborns. The equipment and advanced technology on the NICU provides very specialized care for the tiniest of patients. A Level I NICU provides postnatal care and stabilizes relatively healthy full-term babies born between thirty-five and thirty-seven weeks. Once the newborns are stabilized, they are transferred to another facility. Level II NICUs resuscitate and stabilize preterm and/or ill patients born after thirty-two weeks. Some can provide vents for brief periods (twenty-four hours), and once stabilized they are transferred to a facility more capable of handling care. Level III, advanced care NICUs, provide care for newborns born less than thirty-two weeks as well as babies born with critical illnesses. They offer a full range of respiratory support and advanced imaging. There are some advanced Level III NICUs or Level IV NICUs that have capabilities of providing surgical repair of complex congenital or acquired conditions.
