3. Postpartal Care: Able to evaluate and teach postpartum women who have recently been discharged from a hospital during a telephone assessment and a home visit.
. Able to perform a comprehensive assessment of women in the postpartum period.
a. Has a thorough understanding of normal physiologic processes occurring during the postpartum period.
b. Plans and delivers care to women without complications during the postpartum period.
c. Able to identify women at risk for complications during the postpartum period, including hemorrhage, infection, PIH and preeclampsia.
d. Plans and delivers care to women with complications during the postpartum period in the home setting when appropriate.
e. Has a thorough knowledge of breastfeeding and supports women who are breastfeeding in the postpartum period.
f. Has a thorough understanding of the physiology of human lactation.
g. Promotes and supports the breastfeeding process by providing information on positioning, latch-on, satiation cues, breast care, measures to manage engorgement, use of manual or electric breast pumps, and lactation resources.
h. Facilitates the formula feeding process by providing information about amount of feeding, satiation cues, demand feeding, positioning, burping, formula preparation and measures to prevent or decrease breast engorgement.
i. Promotes maternal-newborn attachment including encouraging looking, touching and talking to newborn, and by providing information about newborn behavior states, sleeping and waking patterns, and comfort strategies.
j. Provides information about maternal self-care including nutrition, hygiene, exercise, comfort measures, safety issues, and signs and symptoms indicating need to call the practitioner.
k. Able to assess pain level and provide women with information on pain management.
l. Recognizes signs and symptoms indicating possible postpartum depression versus postpartum blues, encourages women at risk to seek help, and/or refers to the practitioner.
m. Able to assess support system of the family and provide information about available community supports.
n. Refers women identified with potential risks or complications to provider of care, and makes appropriate referrals to community resources to assist families such as WIC, Family Resource Centers, Head Start, Early Supports and Services.
o. Plans and delivers care to women during the postpartum period considering individual diversities related to age, culture, ethnicity, and religion.
p. Able to assess living arrangements for adequacy, needs, and safety.

4. Newborn Care: Able to assess newborns who have recently been discharged from a hospital during a telephone assessment with a parent, and a home visit.
. Able to perform a comprehensive assessment of the newborn.
a. Able to identify newborns at risk for complications such as jaundice, poor weight gain, feeding issues, infection, cardiac or respiratory concerns.
b. Provides information to parents on management of newborn with jaundice, feeding issues, and refers to practitioner complications and risks assessed.
c. Provides information to parents about newborn care including anticipatory guidance, hygiene, safety issues, feeding techniques, and signs and symptoms indicating need to call the practitioner.
Qualification:Experience Minimum Required
  • More than one year RN, with > 1000 hrs work experience

Experience Preferred/Desired
  • One year RN in acute care hospital setting

Education Minimum Required
  • RN Program completion*

Education Preferred/Desired
  • BSN or enrollment in BSN program

Special Skills Preferred/Desired

Licensure and/or Certifications Required
  • RN
  • AHA or ARC BLS
