Scope of Maternal Newborn Services Department Description

The Maternal Newborn Service at Beverly Hospital provides the full scope of perinatal care including prenatal evaluation of mother and fetus, intrapartum care for labor and birth, intraoperative and recovery care for an operative delivery, postpartum care, newborn care for well babies and special care for premature and high risk newborns. The department includes labor and delivery, postpartum, newborn nursery, a level IIB special care nursery, a perinatology clinic in collaboration with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the North Shore Birth Center, a parent education department and a lactation consultation service.

Labor and Delivery

The Labor and Delivery suite consists of the following: eight LDRs; two Operating Rooms; and a two-bed post anesthesia care unit. Prenatal obstetrical services include: labor evaluations; non stress tests; cervical ripening; contraction stress tests; cerclage and versions. Using a family-centered approach, intrapartum care is provided by an interdisciplinary team that is comprised of registered nurses, certified nurse midwives, an obstetric hospitalist and, as needed, an anesthesiologist. Responsibilities of the registered nurse include: Initial evaluation and admission of patients; continuing evaluation and assessment during labor, including fetal heart rate monitoring, observation of uterine contractions, and patient support; monitoring for complications; assisting during vaginal and operative deliveries; and assisting during postpartum tubal ligations and D and C procedures.

Mother Infant Unit

The Mother-Infant Unit consists of 17 private rooms, two semi-private rooms and two 14-bassinet nurseries. Patients on the Mother Infant Unit include antepartum patients hospitalized with complications of pregnancy, postpartum patients following vaginal or cesarean birth, and newborns born at greater than 35 weeks gestation. Utilizing a modified mother-baby care model, nurses focus on initial and ongoing assessment, closely monitoring and supporting the newborns' transition to extra uterine life; assessment of the involution process and monitoring for complications in the postpartum period; support for the attachment process and breastfeeding; and patient/family education. Procedures performed in the newborn nursery include circumcision, phlebotomy, car seat testing, newborn hearing screening, and phototherapy.

Requirements:

* BSN Preferred
* MA RN
* NRP
* Current Labor & Delivery and Post Partum New Born Nursery experience required, minimum 1 year preferred.
