Job Description:
Lactation RN PRN
Job Summary: The lactation consultant is a member of the Mother-Baby team who provides consultation and hands on assistance for mothers experiencing difficulties related to breast feeding initiation/sustainment in both the inpatient and outpatient setting (prenatally and beyond discharge from the hospital.) The lactation consultant is responsible for initiating a plan of care to provide consistent and evidence-based practice interventions. The lactation consultant provides staff training in lactation support and gives direction by mentoring to nursing and allied health staff at the bedside.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
The following is a summary of the major functions of this individual's job. He or she may perform other duties, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below, and specific functions may change from time to time.
1. Development and coordination of lactation-related department goals and practice
2. Education of parents, staff and documentation of breastfeeding assessment and progress in the patient record
3. Participate in department committees as a breastfeeding resource
4. Consults in all areas in the hospital where there are breastfeeding mothers or infants
5. Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his/her responsibilities related to general safety, department and specific job related hazards.
6. Ensures positive customer relations interactions
Minimum Education, Training and Experience Required:
1. Active Kentucky License
2. BSN or Nursing Certification required except as noted:
a. Individuals hired as a Staff RN prior to October 1, 2013 are grandfathered and exempt from obtaining a BSN or Certification.
b. Associate degreed New Graduate Nurses must obtain a BSN by agreeing to enroll in a program within 1 year of hire/transfer and complete the degree within 5 years of hire/transfer.
c. RN's with less than 5 years of experience as a nurse must enroll in a BSN program within 1 year of hire and complete the degree within 5 years of hire.
d. RN's with 5 years of experience or greater as a nurse must complete one of the following:
i. Obtain a BSN by agreeing to enroll in a program within 1 year of hire and complete the degree within 5 years of hire.
ii. Obtain a Nursing Certification within one year of hire or as soon as eligible to sit for the certification.
3. BCLS Required within 90 days of employment
4. NRP Required within 6 months of employment
5. Lactation Consultant certification required
