POSITION SUMMARY

This position is accountable to assist the CNO/VP Patient Care Services in achieving excellence in practice and in creating improvements in patient care delivery, utilizing system thinking. The position drives operational excellence in patient care delivery, resulting in improved service and quality to our patients. The position promotes an interdisciplinary model of shared decision-making through the mentorship of nurse leaders, resulting in a positive work environment, staff retention, and a culture where decisions are made closest to the patient and family.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Communication and Relationship Building
    • Create and communicate a shared vision for nursing. Reward appropriate behaviors and confront and manage inappropriate behaviors. Create an environment which recognizes and values differences in staff, physicians, patients and communities. Confront inappropriate behaviors and attitudes toward diverse groups.
    • Demonstrate the value of active membership in a professional organization. Develop and maintain effective collegial relationships with local and regional nursing leaders in both practice and academic settings. Support EHS nursing visibility and representation as key stakeholders in state and regional committees and initiatives.
  • Knowledge of the Health Care Environment
    • Maintain knowledge of current nursing practice by ensuring that written organization clinical policies and procedures are reviewed and updated in accordance with evidence-based practice and are in compliance with The Joint Commission, CMS, and other regulatory bodies.
    • Serve as change agent for patient care work/workflow redesign by determining when new care delivery models are appropriate, and then envisioning and developing them, while assisting others in understanding the importance, necessity, impact, and process of change. Utilize a change theory to plan for the implementation of organizational changes.
    • Partner with the Chief Nursing Officer and other leaders throughout the organization in the strategic planning process. Participate in developing the long range goals of the organization in response to community needs and developments in the healthcare industry.
  • Leadership
    • Provide leadership in critical thinking, conflict management, problem-solving and human resource development.
    • Promote systems thinking as a value in the nursing organization. Provide leadership in building loyalty and commitment throughout the organization.
    • Conduct periodic organizational assessments to identify succession planning issues and establish action plans. Serve as a role model for leadership behaviors for nursing and others throughout the organization.
  • Professionalism
    • Teach and mentor others to routinely utilize evidence-based data and research. Utilize research findings for the establishment of standards, practices, and patient care models in the organization and allocate nursing resources based on the measurement of patient acuity/care needed.
    • Assure that the clinical perspective is included in organizational decisions and that nurses are actively involved in decisions that affect their practice.
  • Business Skills
    • Demonstrate financial acumen by analyzing financial statements; by managing financial resources; establishing procedures to assure accurate charging mechanisms; and educating patient care team members on the financial implications of patient care decisions.
    • Articulate federal and state payment systems, regulations, and private insurance issues which affect the organization’s finances. Demonstrate an understanding of the organization’s payer mix, CMI and bench-marking databases.
  • Patient Safety and Quality
    • Collaborate with the Chief Nurse Officer and other leaders to maintain patient safety and quality as the top priorities in the design of clinical systems, processes, policies and procedures. Collaborate with nursing, medical staff, other disciplines and senior leaders to optimize organizational performance in regard to national quality measures. Ensure that national quality benchmarks are built into the metrics for nursing services and individual departments as appropriate. Sustain quality metrics and monthly reporting to the Chief Nurse Executive.
    • Support a non-punitive reporting environment and promote the reporting of unsafe practices, while fostering a just culture.
  • Planning
    • Ensure that nursing is represented in the planning, design, selection and implementation of information systems which may impact clinical or management practice.
    • Collaborate with nursing and other leader to identify areas of growth potential for the organization and evaluate the feasibility and appropriateness of new opportunities.
    • Conduct periodic organizational assessments to identify succession planning issues and establish action plans. Establish mechanisms that provide for the early identification and mentoring of staff with leadership potential.
  • Fiscal Accountability, Resource Allocation, and Strategic Management
    • Maintain oversight accountability for the development of annual budgets for each cost center within areas of responsibility. Provide direction to nursing leaders in the preparation of rationale and justification for budget requests, including recommendations for sufficient numbers of qualified and competent staff to provide care and service.
    • Establish and maintain a process to ensure nursing leadership accountability for capital, salary and non salary expenditures while maintaining the provision of quality services.
  • Professional Development
    • Promote and facilitate the conduct, dissemination and utilization of research in the areas of nursing, health and management systems.
    • Participate in the development and implementation of programs and processes for recognizing expertise, competency and performance of nursing staff.
    • Support the organizational structure for nursing and patient care services. Interview, select, hire, orient and train direct reports. Collaborate with Human Resources in directing other members of the nursing leadership team in these functions.

 

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education
    • Graduate of an accredited nursing program required.  Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Nursing required. Master's Degree in Nursing or related field required.
  • Licensure/certification
    • Current New Hampshire or multi state licensure as a Registered Nurse required.
    • Professional certification preferred.
  • Experience
    • A minimum of five-seven (5-7) years of progressive experience in Nursing leadership and administration required.
  • Knowledge
    • Excellent budgetary knowledge required.
