Under general supervision, provides continuous emotional and physical support for a woman in labor and her immediate family.# Provides support for the duration of the labor into the early postpartum period. Education HS or GED Experience Experience providing continuous labor support under the supervision of a nurse or nurse midwife and /or licensed Obstetrician with a minimum of three well documented clients after taking a Doula Training Course. Skills Knowledge of childbirth theory and practice Work experience in labor and delivery or previous childbirth experience Ability to effectively communicate with expectant couples and healthcare providers in stressful situations Non-judgmental guidance for pain management Ability to manage many tasks simultaneously Knowledge of cultural and religious birth traditions with the ability to support and respect patient#s goals and potential restrictions. Licensures, Certifications Heart Saver (CPR Certification) Certification to include: attendance of an approved Birth Doula Training Course and 3 independent, evaluated and documented births (not including your own physical deliveries) # Physical Requirements Ability to stay alert and provide continuous labor support for a 24-hour period Ability to stand for long periods of time Ability to remain calm under pressure and to accept responsibility for follow through Working Conditions Normal patient care environment with possible exposure to excessive noise, dust, and temperature Exposure to adverse working conditions due to performance of patient care activities and exposure to communicable diseases # Conditions of Employment Copies of positive evaluations of labor support services from a) 3 clients, plus either b) 3 nurses and two doctors, or c) 3 nurses and 3 midwives. Thorough knowledge the GBMC Doula required reading list within 14 days of hire date: #1. Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn by Penny Simkin #2. The Birth Partner by Penny Simkin #3. The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding by Diane Wiessinger and Diana West Must provide coordinator with a minimum of 5 on call (24 hour) days per month including 1 weekend (24 hour) date Birth doula and postpartum doula support may only be provided through The GBMC Doula Touch program if the client/patient/friend/relative is delivering at GBMC Successful completion of an approved Doula Training Course Certification as a Childbirth Educator, or Nurse Midwife Register and attend free of charge the following GBMC education classes: Childbirth Education, Infant Care, and Breastfeeding
