POSITION SUMMARY

The Perinatal Educator is responsible for providing educational opportunities for the Perinatal Staff through in-services, safety drills, skills validations and management of unit specific competencies. This position requires broad and in-depth knowledge of labor and delivery, postpartum care, obstetrical surgeries, breastfeeding, and newborns. The Perinatal Educator will also be responsible for providing education and classes to patients either before, during or after their hospital stay related to childbirth, breastfeeding and infant care.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops, conducts, and evaluates in-services, orientation and continuing educational programs
  • Coordinate programs, conducts classes and/or provide individualized instruction to perinatal staff
  • Coordinate programs, conducts classes and/or provide individualized instruction to patients in-house or within the community
  • Conducts regularly schedule safety drills for the Perinatal Services department
  • Develops learning objectives and measures outcomes of educational programs for patients and staff
  • Documents attendance and ensures educational requirements are met on an annual basis
  • Assist the leadership with the planning and implementation of staff development programs
  • Conducts an annual educational needs assessment for the Perinatal Services division and plans activities to meet the needs
  • Supervises nurse preceptors during the orientation process for new staff members including those in the Versant training program
  • Collaborates with the leadership team to develops performance improvement plans for nursing staff related to skills at the bedside
  • Participates in organizational and community educational projects related to Perinatal Services
  • Demonstrates knowledge of adult learner concepts
  • Demonstrates knowledge of current maternal and neonatal care standards
  • Demonstrates knowledge of policies and procedures of the hospital and for providing community educational support
  • Independently recognizes and performs duties which need to be done without being directly assigned.
  • Establishes priorities; organizes work and time to meet them.
  • Recognizes and responds to priorities, accepts changes and new ideas.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Has insight into problems and the ability to develop workable alternatives.

  • Adheres to attendance and punctuality requirements per hospital policy. Provides proper notification for absences and tardiness. Takes corrective action to prevent recurring absences or tardiness.
  • Uses time effectively and constructively. Does not abuse supplies, equipment, and service.
  • Observes all hospital and departmental policies governing conduct while at work (e.g., telephone and computer use, electronic messaging, smoking regulations, parking, breaks and other related policies).


A. Education
  • Master's Degree in Nursing Education.

B. Qualifications/Experience
  • Be able to communicate with a variety of relevant entities and facilitate collaborative responsibilities and communication.
  • Strong communication, public relations and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to different situations.
  • CA RN License required.

C. Special Skills/Knowledge
  • Current BCLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current.
  • Certification in Inpatient OB and/or Maternal Newborn Nursing preferred
  • Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program Card (NRP)
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
  • Advanced Fetal Monitoring Required. (AWHONN or NCC preferred)
  • Must complete annual Workplace Violence Prevention Program/Certificate, per hospital policy, during initial training/orientation but not to exceed 30 days from hire/transfer.
  • Valid S.T.A.B.L.E course certificate
