Position Summary: This position will be responsible for serving as the primary Registered Nurse delivering care to postpartum women and their newborn children admitted to YKHC. This patient population will include low-risk to high-risk pregnancies.

Responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:
  • Transitional care of newborns during their first hours of life.
  • Performs a systematic and thorough physical assessment based upon knowledge of the normal and abnormal physiology and pathophysiology of the neonate.
  • Identifies the neonate at risk for complications and provides appropriate care.
  • Develops care plans and cares for the normal term newborn and medically fragile neonate.
  • Stabilizes and transports critically ill neonates as part of an interdisciplinary team to a higher level of care when appropriate.
  • Caring and Assessment of the postpartum patient.
  • Cares for the post-surgical patient.
  • Provides care to the High-Risk postpartum patient.

Minimum Education

Must have completed a program of education in nursing from an NLN approved institution. Associate Degree in Nursing and BSN strongly preferred.

Minimum Experience

Minimum experience preferred 1 - 2 years recent experience. At least 1 years' experience working in a Special Care Nursery/NICU and Postpartum environment. Will train desired candidate to PP care if necessary.

License, Certification, Registration

A current and valid Alaska State Registered Nurse License. In addition, must be licensed in good standing in the State of Alaska as a Registered Professional Nurse. Current BLS, & NRP, required. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification completion within 3 months of date of hire

National Certification in Maternal Newborn Nursing preferred. CPR certification required every two years or as specified by the work. S.T.A.B.L.E. preferred.

Office equipment (i.e. computer, telephone, fax machine, copy machine)

Medical equipment include Fetal Monitor & Datascope, amongst others

Specialized Knowledge and Skills

Proficient oral and written communication skills.

1. Able to practice nursing as described in the Alaska Status regarding the practice of Registered Nursing. Cognitive and technical knowledge required with the ability to manage care across the continuum of care. Must be flexible with work schedule and possess the ability for independent actions within prescribed limits. Able to utilize the nursing process in the provision of patient care. Able to administer treatments, medications, interpret diagnostic tests, provide patient/family/significant other education and collaborate with other professions. Knowledge of AWHONN standards required.

2. Knowledge of medical terminology.

3. Ability to work in patient care setting.

4. Language Skills

Ability to read, analyzes, and interprets general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to document actions involved in care delivery. Ability to follow guidelines and procedures. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Theoretical knowledge of the nursing process, care management, and continuity of care.

5. Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent draw and interpret graphs, and input computer information.

6. Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
