POSITION SUMMARY:
To be fully engaged in providing Quality/No Harm, Customer Experience, and Stewardship by: Serving as an experienced RN who assumes the role practitioner, educator, consultant, patient advocate and researcher. The lactation consultant assists the breastfeeding mother to attain her individual goals by utilizing a collaborative practice model.
PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Quality/No Harm:
* Provides clinical support and education to the inpatient breastfeeding mothers as evidenced by documentation of assessments, interventions and patient teaching.
* Provides outpatient clinical management and support to breastfeeding mothers to include the rental and/or sale of necessary lactation equipment and supplies.
* Demonstrates effective and safe clinical practice as evidenced by Skills Fair demonstration, completion of yearly competency assessment and Age Specific Checklist.
* Demonstrates effective communication with other members of the Healthcare team and promote effective team functioning.
* Demonstrates dependability, reliability and flexibility.
* Provides at least one staff education program annually, two community education programs, and acts as a preceptor to new associates.
* Demonstrates leadership in nursing practice across the healthcare continuum.
* Documents to the plan of care as needed for continuum of care.
Customer Experience:
* Provides services to patients and families with sensitivity and respect for their needs, expectations, age, cultural and individual differences.
* Educates patients and family and documents education.
* Contributes to the patient experience as evidenced by positive patient satisfaction scores and HCAHPs scores for department/medical center and/or written compliments by patients/others as well as consistent performance of purposeful hourly rounding and bedside shift report.
Stewardship:
* Uses and cares for equipment and supplies economically.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
* Currently licensed to practice in the State of Florida
* Must hold current AHA BLS Healthcare Provider Completion Card prior to start date and maintain.
* BSN preferred
* IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) preferred or certified within one year of
* employment or eligibility after hire.
* Minimum of two years clinical experience in maternal/infant nursing preferred.
* Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills
* NRP within first year of hire.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
* Must be able to stand, walk, bend, and stoop for 90% of assigned shift.
* Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds unassisted up to 10 times a day.
* Must be able to speak and understand the English language.
* Exposure to bio-hazardous waste, MSDS substances, and unknown diseases.
* Corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
MENTAL DEMANDS:
* Must be able to work in a stressful environment.
* Must be able to respond appropriately to life threatening situations.
* Must be able to assess, interpret data and educate patients and families of various ages and
* levels of understanding
