General Description

The Fetal Center Staff RN assists patients rapidly, uneventfully, and as effectively as possible through their episode of care while maintaining quality and safety as a priority.  Delegates, directs, oversees, and provides developmentally appropriate patient care.  Practices professional nursing and promotes patient advocacy in accordance with the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses and maintains a current Ohio Nursing License.  The Fetal Center Staff RN will lead the coordination of a clear and concise inpatient care plan for maternal perinatal patients in a manner that meets the needs of the patient and family.

  • For patients undergoing fetal interventional procedures, in collaboration with the Obstetric and Maternal Fetal Medicine Providers evaluates maternal and fetal health status pre and post fetal procedure. 
  • For patients undergoing special delivery service, in collaboration with Obstetric and Maternal Fetal Medicine Providers evaluates maternal and fetal health status pre delivery and maternal health status post-delivery, and in multiple pregnancies, neonatal health status post-delivery for well twin, triplet or higher order multiples. 
  • Provides nursing care using a Family Centered approach within fetal care and special delivery services. 
  • Assesses individualized patient needs.  Communicates patient care needs and priorities to assigned healthcare team.
  • Demonstrates sterile and aseptic techniques, as appropriate in the performance of and/or assisting with procedures and interventions.
  • Performs procedures under the direction of Obstetric and Maternal Fetal Medicine Providers and in accordance with provider orders in accordance with the Ohio Board of Nursing Law and Rules.
  • Administers appropriate obstetric medications in accordance with hospital policy and under the direction of the Obstetric and Maternal Fetal Medicine Providers and in accordance with a written order. 
  • Provides observational experience for students, observing the rights and dignity of each patient and family.  Serves as a preceptor for onboarding new hires.
  • Assists providers with educational opportunities of residents, medical house staff, and medical students in obstetric care in the fetal center special delivery setting.
  • Plans, implements, educates, and evaluates care using Evidence-Based Practices.
  • Utilizes Therapeutic Communication while monitoring the physical, psychological, and social needs of patients and families.
  • Engages in the “workplace community” by staying aware of changes, participation in data collection or auditing, understanding Quality Improvement, and representing staff at relevant meetings and then reporting important information and updates back to staff.  Assists with orientation of new staff.  Attends and provides unit in-service education programs as appropriate to role.

Education Requirement

BSN

Licensure Requirement

Registered Nurse Licensed in state of Ohio

Certifications

Electronic Fetal Monitoring, BLS, NRP.
ACLS or ALSO preferred but not required.

Skills

Competency in obstetric nursing clinical practice.

Complete ongoing and annual Fetal Center Staff RN competencies.

Demonstrated knowledge of dosages, desired effects, side effects, and adverse reactions.

Experience

5 years inpatient obstetric nursing; labor and delivery and high-risk antepartum experience preferred.
