The Nurse Educator is a registered professional nurse who demonstrates expertise in a specific area of clinical nursing. The Educator position is based on the needs of the patient, healthcare system and expertise of the educator. Facilitates quality activities based on identified needs to enhance excellence in clinical practice. Prioritizes these activities in accordance with patient, staff and organizational goals and objectives. Maintains standards of professional nursing. The scope of practice encompasses the use of the nursing process in major areas: practice, education, consultation and administration.

  • The NICU Clinical Educator will have specialized knowledge and skills that will be used within three major areas of focus:  direct patient care, nurses and nursing practice, and the organization. The NICU Clinical Nurse Educator and nursing are partners in leading the clinical practice for the specialty of neonatal nursing and the department of Women’s and Children’s Services. 
  • The NICU Clinical Nurse Educator will coordinate and guide clinical activities and projects of nurses for the 24 bed Level III NICU and be accountable for collaborating with members of the health care team to design, implement, and measure safe, cost-effective, evidence-based care strategies.
  • The NICU Clinical Nurse Educator will be responsible for maintaining current professional knowledge and competencies while contributing to the advancement of the practice of nursing at the unit, local, and state/national level. This person will work closely with the Director of the NICU, Administrative Director of Nursing Education & Professional Practice.

Requirements: Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois. Bachelor’s required, Master’s preferred. 3 – 5 years of experience in a specific area of expertise. Exhibits personal characteristics that enhance the effectiveness of the role, including effective interpersonal communication skills and a proactive approach to problem solving. CPR.

  • MSN preferred
  • NRP Instructor preferred

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conducts regular meetings with newly hired NICU staff, evaluates and documents progress
  • Provides clinical duties, as assigned
  • Plans, coordinates, monitors safety drills as needed for hospital and regulatory compliance
  • Oversees hospital-based NRP program to ensure quality and current evidence-based standards are followed
  • Monitors required staff certifications and licensure for compliance
  • Provides education to patients, families, staff and significant others using established current evidence-based practice education materials and assists patients and families in making healthcare decisions
  • Participates in Interdisciplinary Care Rounds in the NICU
  • Supports Clinical Care Councils, as needed
  • Liaison for Perinatal Network
