JOB SUMMARY: To perform, in collaboration with the physician, diagnostic and therapeutic tasks to assure that patient care is delivered in a caring and efficient manner throughout the Geisinger Health System in an effort to increase patient satisfaction and patient outcomes. Will assist in gathering the data necessary in implementing the therapeutic plan of the physician. Will function as a patient advocate in the medical care system as confidant, advisor, and liaison between patients, designated family members and physicians. Reports to the Chairman, Women's Health Service Line. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The specific statements shown in each section of this description are not intended to be all-inclusive. They represent typical elements considered necessary to successfully perform the job. *1. Assists the physician in the care and evaluation of patients. In collaboration with the supervising/precepting physician: - Performs history and physical examinations on gynecology patients within the medical center. Establishes a presumptive diagnosis, performs the general workup of the patient and collaborates with the physician for the management of the patients problems following diagnosis.
- Makes complete entries in the electronic medical record, writes orders, writes prescriptions and records progress notes.
- Initiates appropriate laboratory, radiological and special examinations or tests required for the evaluations of symptoms and/or surgery under supervision of physician.
- Returns patient phone calls.
- Communicates with patients /guardians by phone/electronically and/or written letter regarding the patients health-related problems.
- Communicates with referring physicians to keep them informed of patient's progress and ongoing care needs.
- Acts as a liaison with other health care organizations and community agencies.
- Intervenes appropriately to ensure that the psychosocial needs of the patient are met.
- Participates in peri-operative care; provides patient education and counseling to patients or guardians regarding the Gyn/oncology treatment, diagnostic procedures and surgeries. Completes pre-operative admission orders.
- Conveys summaries of all pertinent medical findings to patients/guardian.
- Assists in scheduling of chemotherapy and follow up.
- Develops care plan for post hospital care as needed. Communicates with visiting nurses and other agencies.
- Provides information and support to patients and designated family members, during inpatient procedures, surgeries, etc.
- Provides follow-up in health maintenance care including appropriate adjustments of medications to patients in accordance with specific instruction from the supervising physician. Works with insurers to deliver appropriate care.
- Assures that all necessary history and medical record information is available at time of initial visit.
- Performs approved clinical procedures in collaboration with the physician.
- Participates in studies to measure outcomes including patient and referring physician satisfaction.
*2. Performs other duties - Participates in appropriate internal and external continuing education; attends departmental meetings.
- Prepares and presents academic lectures on topics of individual expertise as agreed upon by Department Director.
- May participate in Inpatient rounds.
- Provides continuing education for other health care personnel (nursing, referring physicians, etc&) as directed by supervising physician.
- Maintains knowledge base of regulatory requirements.
- Performs all other duties as assigned by the supervising/precepting physician within the Nurse Practitioners scope of practice.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: The successful Physician Assistant candidate will work under the responsibility and supervision of the physician and require completion of an ARC-PA (or predecessor organization) approved physician assistant program, current NCCPA certification or eligibility and Pennsylvania State licensure. The successful Nurse Practitioner candidate will work in collaboration with the physician and have a certificate of completion from an approved program for Nurse Practitioners or be eligible to hold national certification that allows the NP to work with the patient populations and location settings associated with this position. Must be eligible for licensure as a nurse practitioner in the state of PA.
